THE CUBE is under construction. QIU is excited to share a few pictures of the on-site progress of THE CUBE, pavilion for 2021 Kaohsiung International Container Arts Festival, Taiwan. The official opening of the Festival is 28 December 2021.
THE CUBE · Under Construction
THE CUBE’s structural frame is welded onsite into larger modules – four 3x3m frames including subframe where required – on ground that are hoisted in place and welded against adjacent modules. Once the construction of the structural frame is finished, THE CUBE is powdercoated white uniformly.
The framework of the five containers is constructed and powdercoated white off-site in a factory. The translucent Polycorbonate DanPalon cladding panels are installed onsite.
QIU is working in close collaboration with the lighting manufacturer to achieve the intended pulsating lighting effect of the luminous containers. We’re reviewing the lighting effect through mock-ups and will be fine-tuning it after installation on site. It’s a vital part of the design, that will reinforce the concept of THE CUBE and engage which the visitor. In addition, the lighting effect will make THE CUBE stand out in the Kaohsiung Skyline during the Koahsiung Lunar New Year Light Show Festival.
THE CUBE’s minimal structure turns into lines of light, the pulsating floating boxes, and its (intangible) scale makes it highly visible and appealing even from across the river, will evoke curiosity and draw people to the 2021 Kaohsiung International Container Arts Festival.
